Permanent Account Number
Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a code that acts as identification of Indians, especially those who pay Income Tax. It is given by Income Tax Department ( issued under Section 139A of the Income Tax Act) under the supervision of the Central Board for Direct Taxes (CBDT). The PAN is unique to each individual and is valid for the life time of the holder, throughout India. An important point to note would be that once issued, the PAN is not affected by a change of address.
The Main objective of PAN is to bring a universal identification to all financial transactions and to prevent tax evasion by keeping track of monetary transactions, especially those of high-net-worth individuals who can impact the economy.
The PAN is Mandatory for Opening of Current Account, Transactions in cash exceeds 50000/- at a time, Salary people and Sale and Purchase of Assets etc.,
The PAN card Contain One Code like ABCDE1234F and Name, Father name, Photo of Person who's applied(only for Individuals) lastly Signature.(see above image)
Code Contains 10 Digits with Alphanumeric like ABCDE1234F
- The first 3 letters are sequence of alphabets from AAA to ZZZ.
- The fourth character informs about the type of holder of the card. Each holder is uniquely defined as below:
- The fifth character of the PAN is the first character of the surname or last name of the person,( in the case of a Individuals). If PAN applied by Other than Individual like Company/ HUF/ Firm/ AOP/ BOI/ Local Authority/ Artificial Judicial Person/ Govt, then the Fifth Character will be the surname or last name of the name of the Entity, Trust, society, or Organization.
- The last character is an alphabetic check digit.
How To Apply for PAN
There are two modes of ways to apply for PAN.
- Online Way through NSDL or UTITSL
- Apply manually through agents of NSDL or UTITSL
"After Completion of Online Process Take Application Print then attach Photos put signatures and then Send to Representative Agents Address with valid Proofs"
If you want to Apply by Manually, Fill Attached Application and attach Two Photos with Signatures and Valid Proofs, then Submit Application with Rs. 107/-(if Outside India Rs. 994/-) to Representative Agents of NADL and UTITSL.
The Payment can be made either by
- Demand Draft
- Credit Card / Debit Card
- Net Banking.
PAN Requirements
- Full Name
- Father Name(only for Individuals)
- Date of Birth/Date of Incorporation
- Address of Applicant
- Income Details of Applicant***( If Student Don't have income select "No Income" Option)
- Valid Proof (Below Mentioned)
Valid Proofs
Individuals/HUF
Proof of Identity (POI)
- Aadhaar Card issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India; or
- Elector's photo identity card; or
- Driving License; or
- Passport; or
- Ration card having photograph of the applicant; or
- Arm's license; or
- Photo identity card issued by the Central Government or State Government or Public Sector Undertaking; or
- Pensioner card having photograph of the applicant; or
- Central Government Health Service Scheme Card or Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme photo card
- (ii) Certificate of identity in Original signed by a Member of Parliament or Member of Legislative Assembly or Municipal Councilor or a Gazetted officer, as the case may be (in prescribed format); or
- (iii) Bank certificate in Original on letter head from the branch(along with name and stamp of the issuing officer) containing duly attested photograph and bank account number of the applicant (in prescribed format)
Proof of Address (POA)
- Aadhaar Card issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India; or
- Elector's photo identity card; or
- Driving License; or
- Passport; or
- Passport of the spouse; or
- Post office passbook having address of the applicant; or
- Latest property tax assessment order; or
- Domicile certificate issued by the Government; or
- Allotment letter of accommodation issued by Central or State Government of not more than three years old; or
- Property Registration Document; or
- (ii) Copy of following documents of not more than three months old
- Electricity Bill
- Landline Telephone or Broadband connection bill
- Water Bill
- Consumer gas connection card or book or piped gas bill
- Bank account statement or as per note 2
- Depository account statement
- Credit card statement
- (iii) Certificate of Address in Original signed by a Member of Parliament or Member of Legislative Assembly or Municipal Councilor or a Gazetted officer, as the case may be (in prescribed format)
- (iv) Employer certificate in original (in prescribed format).
Proof of Date of Birth (PDOB)
Copy of the following documents if they bear the name, date, month and year of birth of the applicant, namely:-
- Aadhaar Card issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India; or
- Elector's photo identity card; or
- Driving License; or
- Passport; or
- Matriculation certificate or Mark sheet of recognized board; or
- Birth certificate issued by the municipal authority or any office authorized to issue birth and death certificate by the Registrar of Birth and Deaths or the Indian Consulate as defined in clause (d) of sub-section (1) of section 2 of the Citizenship Act, 1955 (57 of 1955); or
- Photo identity card issued by the Central Government or State Government or Central Public Sector Undertaking or State Public Sector Undertaking; or
- Domicile certificate issued by the Government; or
- Central Government Health Service Scheme photo card or Ex-servicemen Contributory Health Scheme photo card; or
- Pension payment order; or
- Marriage certificate issued by the Registrar of Marriages; or
- Affidavit sworn before a magistrate stating the date of birth.
Company/LLP
- Certificate of Registration issued by the Registrar
Firm/Trust
- Firm/Trust deed; or
- Certificate of registration number issued by the Registrar of Firms/Charity Commissioner.
Association of persons (other than Trusts) or Body of Individuals or Local authority or Artificial Juridical Person
- Agreement; or
- Certificate of registration number issued by charity commissioner or registrar of cooperative society or any other competent authority; or
- Any other document originating from any Central or State Government Department establishing identity and address of such person.
